CD59 (Protectin) is a 19–25 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein expressed on hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells. It functions as a complement regulatory protein by binding C8/C9 and inhibiting membrane attack complex (MAC) formation, thereby protecting host cells from complement-mediated lysis. CD59 also participates in T-cell activation and costimulation. CD59 deficiency can cause hemolytic anemia, thrombosis, and cerebral infarction.
